What is Cosequin?

Cosequin contains three ingredients:-
Glucosamine hydrochloride (Glucosamine HCl)
Chondroitin Sulphate
Manganese Sulphate
These highly purified ingredients act to support the syovial joints in the body, helping to reduce or prevent stiffness and discomfort. The following forms of Cosequin are available:
Cosequin Cat Sprinkle capsules, which can be opened and mixed with food
Cosequin RS Sprinkle capsules for small dogs (weighing less than 10kg)
Cosequin DS Sprinkle Capsules for medium and large dogs
Cosequin DS Chewable Tablets (also for medium and large dogs)
Cosequin Equine (a powder form for Horses)

(Note that most human preparations of Glucosamine contain the slightly different version Glucosamine Sulphate. This can be used in dogs and cats, but absorption from the gut is poor in these species, so the hydrochloride form is thought to be much better.)

How does Cosequin work?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are used by the body to make a variety of the components of bone, cartilage, fibrous connective tissue and the lubricating fluid n(synovial fluid) inside the joints. Boosting the dietry levels of these things increases blood levels and therefore their availibility to the joints where they are needed.

How should I use Cosequin? When to use cosequin?

Cosequin can be given to animals with sore, stiff joints, or in any situation where joint damage has occurred or is expected. The main use is to treat arthritis (osteoarthritis), which can be diagnosed by your vet. However cosequin can be used after a joint injury, or before and after joint surgery. It needs to be given at the full recommended dose rate for 4-6 weeks, then the dose can often be halved with no loss of effect.
Cosequin can also be useful to give to cats which have been diagnosed with the bladder problem "Feline Idiopathic Cystitis" (also known as Feline urological syndrome). The glucosamine is able to help build upp a protective lining inside the bladder so that affected cats are not so readily irritated by the concentrated urine they tend to produce. Again it has to be given for a few weeks before it is effective, but it can offer some protection against this painful and distressing condition.

What are the Cosequin Side Effects?

Cosequin is virtually free from side effects. Some ianimals have very sensitive stomachs and anything added to their food can cause a temporary upset (diarrhoea, loss of appetite, possibly even vomiting.) This is rare with Cosequin, but individuals known to be sensitive in this way, or any showing any of these symptoms, should be given a very low dose for a few days with slightly less food than normal.  If Cosequin is given in excessively high doses for an extended period,  it can theoretically make an animal more prone to develop diabetes through its effect on the cells of the pancreas. This would never be expected to happen at the normal, recommended dose, but its use in dabetic animals should be discussed with the veterinary surgeon involved. The ingredients in Cosequin are so pure that an allergic response to Cosequin is very unlikely to happen, unlike some of the cheaper products available on the market.

How effective is Cosequin?

Most vets consider it to be of benefit if used appropriately. There are over 50 scientific articles demonstrating a useful effect from Cosequin administration. The down side is that not all animals show an obvious response. Arthritis and joint health generally are complex subjects with many contributory factors. Before it is given, it is difficult to predict to what extent it will help. However since it is such a safe product and it has been demonstrated many times to help a significant proportion of individuals, its use is recommended.

Where can I buy Cosequin?

You can buy Cosequin online at internet prices from the trusted online veterinary supplier Viovet.co.uk ,while being assured that it is the same, top quality product available at much greater cost from most local vets.
